Hollywood has the Oscars. Broadway has the Tonys. Now Twitter has the... Shorty Awards
The New York Times

Welcome to the 4th Annual Shorty Awards!

What do Conan O'Brien, Cory Booker, Sesame Street's Grover, Suze Orman, Ted Leo, Neil Patrick Harris and NASA have in common? Besides being awesome, they're all Shorty Award winners.

The Shorty Awards honor the best of social media, recognizing the people and organizations producing real-time short form content across Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Foursquare, and the rest of the social Web.

Every year, millions of people visit the Shorty Awards site to tweet nominations for their favorite social media content creators. All those tweets culminate in a highly anticipated awards ceremony that celebrates the winners in dozens of featured categories, as well as thousands of crowd-sourced community ones. For the second time, the Shorty Awards will also honor the industry's best agencies, brands, and social media professionals.

About the Process

The public is invited to nominate social media users for excellence over the past year. Each award recognizes a content creator's entire body of work, not just an individual tweet or post. Nominations are made by tweeting or through ShortyAwards.com.

Your Categories

Social media expands every year. So do the Shorty Awards, which will include more categories and different kinds of awards. In 2012, dozens of featured categories will be open for voting on ShortyAwards.com. Several crowd-sourced community categories will be chosen to be featured. The final list of featured categories will be determined by the level of interest and the quality of the nominations.

Your Awards

In each of the featured categories that are finalized when the voting closes, the six people or organizations that receive the most tweeted votes will be 2012 Shorty Awards finalists. The finalist with the most votes receives a Shorty Vox Populi (popular vote) distinction.

Several winners in the most interesting featured categories will be presented to be presented to the Real-Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences, which will review the finalists' work and decide the Shorty Award winners in those categories. These winners may be different from the Shorty Vox Populi. These Shorty Award winners will be honored at the the gala awards ceremony in New York City, complete with 140-character acceptance speeches. It is possible for a finalist to win both the Shorty Award and Shorty Vox Populi in a category.

Nominees must submit contact information online here so award organizers can contact them if they become a finalist.
