The Shorty Interview
with Reid Gower
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
I try to make all of my tweets grammatically sound. Finding 140 character succinctness is actually a fun writing exercise.
Why should we vote for you?
4 million views has reignited interest in NASA and two of the greatest scientific thinkers of our time.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
What inspires you to tweet?
Twitter. The power to instantly propagate memes is something of a cultural phenomenon and I can't watch it unfold from the sidelines.
How do you imagine Twitter changing?
Linguistically. The 140 character limit is a concrete "selective pressure" that will drive the evolution of a Twitter adapted language.
What is one of the biggest misconceptions of Twitter?
That it's all, "What I ate for lunch" and other such nonsense. Twitter can actually be a phenomenal news source.
Why should people follow you?
I've got personality, yo.
Why'd you start tweeting?
To promote scientific literacy, scientific media, and scientific values.
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
Jumping on tragic news hashtags for the sake of self-promotion.
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
Surprising. Predicting 9/11, arab spring, a black president, bank bailouts, #OWS, and the rise of social media would've been outrageous.
