The Shorty Interview
with Allen Schatz
What's your best tweet?
Any one of them that made someone smile.
What are six things you could never do without?
Food. Water. Shelter. Baseball. Sunshine. Springtime.
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
I use it to related to readers and others who share my affinity for writing and books. It's helped build my writing brand for sure.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
The iPhone app is pretty cool. I use that one the most.
Twitter or Facebook?
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
During baseball season when various iterations of "#STFUxxxxx" come up (where xxxxx is particular annoying announcer). Fun stuff.
What feature should Twitter add?
Less clicks to manage Direct Messages. Maybe "live" video tweets... although that could get ugly quickly!
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
Seeing it is a "wish", then Thomas Jefferson. He had a lot of cool ideas. We could use more cool ideas these days in politics.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
Pretty much all of them.
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
Anyone who might be "the one" to put me over in my writing career. Or 'rassler CM Punk.
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
Yes, too many to list, because they either didn't interact or were spam bots. The point is to connect. Kind of a waste otherwise.
Why should we vote for you?
Because like I said, I'm awesomesauce.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
"Awesomesauce" and "raschatzWriting" would be good ones. :-)
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
A multi-car pile up of a tie involving several fellow writers and a number of "fans". Hard to say one is more interesting than the others.
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
I can't say I've created any... until now! #raschatzWriting should be on everyone's hit list! :-)
How do you make your tweets unique?
By writing them myself. I am me. I am unique.
What inspires you to tweet?
The chance to share and interact. It might be virtual, but it allows connections where there previously were none.
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
I've been put in "Twitter Jail" a few times, yes. During various Phillies games mostly. Still gets on my nerves though.
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Be real. Be yourself. Be engaging. Be open. Be honest. Don't click on strange links in your DMs. Call your mother from time to time.
How long can you go without a tweet?
As long as I have to.
What question are we not asking here that we should?
If a tree falls in the woods, does a butterfly flap its wings?
How do you imagine Twitter changing?
Honestly, it's pretty good now. Gives me chance to meet readers and others interested in writing (and Philly sports).
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
Anyone who uses it to engage in an honest way, especially those in positions or situations where being unreachable is the norm.
Who is the funniest person on Twitter that you follow?
What is one of the biggest misconceptions of Twitter?
That there are NO real people on it. I'm real. I've engaged with hundreds of others. It's not all spam, not even close.
Why should people follow you?
Because I am awesomesauce.
Can you name some one-of-a-kind Twitter accounts that you follow?
I like to think every Tweep I follow is one of a kind. I know that's not what you were after on this one, but it's true.
How do you decide what to tweet?
To share random thoughts or those inspired by news/events. Mostly to interact with other Tweeps and supporters.
Why'd you start tweeting?
It was the latest "new" thing when it was new. It seemed like a cool idea. Turns out it really was. That doesn't always happen.
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
Yes. I've engaged with hundreds of people I would have otherwise never had opportunity to do so. Comes in handy on "lonely" days.
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Retweet things about my books -- wait, that's not what you meant. Have regular conversations. Share ideas. Sing songs.
How will the world change in the next year?
Someone will invent a gadget that makes some other gadget obsolete. And hopefully, the Mayans were wrong.
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
ONLY tweeting RTs. ONLY tweeting links to Amazon / eBay / other sales points. NEVER directly interacting. Being a spam bot.
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
A lot like it is today but a lot different. Hopefully, some of the pervading anger has dissipated by then. That would be good.
