The Shorty Interview
with Gisli Olafsson
What's your best tweet?
Correcting a rumor that a second eruption had started in #Iceland during the first #ashtag cloud over Europe.
What are six things you could never do without?
1. My family. 2. My passion for helping others. 3. Some form of connectivity. 4. My wallet. 5. Pen and paper. 6. My friends.
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
I use it to connect to people around the world who share the same passion as I do - helping people.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
Twitter or Facebook?
Twitter for information. Facebook for family interaction.
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
What feature should Twitter add?
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
Angelina Jollie - her work for refugees would be boosted if she would use Twitter to tell their stories.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
I try to never shorten anything - just write more clearly in 140 characters.
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
I would of course love to have more mega-twitter "stars" follow me to get more re-tweets - but for me quality is above quantity.
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
Yes many people. If I don't see value in the tweets they post.
Why should we vote for you?
Because I spend all my time helping others figure out how technology can help during the most chaotic times - right after a disaster strikes
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
Connecting with @_robin_sharma and @tonyrobbins to discuss leadership.
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
#ashtag and it became very popular :-)
How do you make your tweets unique?
I try to be the most informative tweeter during a disaster that ensures only confirmed information is being shared.
What inspires you to tweet?
Touching peoples lives.
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Yes - when I had my Twitter and FaceBook accounts connected during a large earthquake - my family said I flooded their wall :-)
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Don't be afraid to tweet. Just write from your heart. Never retweet without confirming the information first through another source.
How long can you go without a tweet?
What question are we not asking here that we should?
How many children do you have? 5 - all teenagers :-)
How do you imagine Twitter changing?
I see it as a platform for connecting everybody to everyone else. It breaks down the degrees of separation we all have.
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
@_robin_sharma @paulocoehlo and @tonyrobbins for really connecting with their readers.
Who is the funniest person on Twitter that you follow?
What is one of the biggest misconceptions of Twitter?
That you have to read every tweet from everyone you follow :-)
Why should people follow you?
If they want to learn more about disasters, Iceland or leadership - then I will try to keep them informed and entertained.
Can you name some one-of-a-kind Twitter accounts that you follow?
@_robin_sharma - my constant source of inspiration for leadership in all walks of life.
How do you decide what to tweet?
I tweet about things I like. I tweet mainly about disasters, Iceland and leadership.
Why'd you start tweeting?
To share my passion of helping others with the world.
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
It has allowed me to make new friends around the world that help me make my dream come true.
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Use it for social good instead of endless check-in messages.
How will the world change in the next year?
Social media will continue to change the way we have done things for decades. The silos are breaking down between people and organizations.
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
Do not tweet about information that should remain private during a disaster...
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
I hope it will be a kinder and more resilient world that can deal better with the ever growing disasters it will face.
